Company history

Evoke plc's history page says 888 was founded in the British Virgin Islands as Virtual Holdings Limited in 1997, obtained a Gibraltar gaming licence and moved its headquarters there in 2003, and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2005. It records that 888sport launched in 2008, giving the group casino, poker, sports and bingo. Evoke's brand page also dates 888sport to 2008.Sources: evoke plc; evoke plc

Later steps on the same page: BetBright's sports betting platform and technology were acquired in March 2019, a proprietary sports betting product launched in 2020, the William Hill acquisition completed on 1 July 2022, and the group renamed itself evoke plc in May 2024.Sources: evoke plc; evoke plc

Four company names appear across the regulators' pages: 888 UK Limited at the Commission, Virtual Global Digital Services Limited at Gibraltar, Virtual Digital Services Limited on the Malta seal page, and VHL Ontario Limited at iGaming Ontario. None of those pages says how the four are related, so we report each as read.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gibraltar Gambling Division; Malta Gaming Authority; iGaming Ontario

Malta Gaming Authority (MGA)

Held by: Virtual Digital Services Limited (named on the Authority's seal page)

The seal page, with an address in Sliema, Malta, shows the licensee as Licensed under MGA/CRP/121/2006-09, with fixed-odds betting among its game types, and lists 888sport.com among its websites. A second licence, MGA/B2C/543/2018, is shown as Surrendered. The register search for that company name returned only Mr Green Limited, C 43260, MGA/CRP/121/2006. Where you can and cannot use it

Great Britain: yes. The Commission register lists 888 UK Limited with remote licences and 888sport.com among its active domains. The UK responsible-gaming policy applies to anyone who plays or registers an account in the United Kingdom.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission; 888sport

Ontario: yes, under VHL Ontario Limited, whose Play 888 Sport site appears in the directory accurate to 1 September 2026.Source: iGaming Ontario

Elsewhere the position varies. The UK policy points players in European Single Market states, and elsewhere, to other policies, and names Spain, Italy and Denmark as local licences. We did not read those registers.Source: 888sport

Payments and withdrawals

The homepage names Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Trustly, Luxon Pay and Paysafecard for deposits. The banking page gives up to 10 minutes for most methods and up to 7 business days for Trustly, and adds that unusual cases can take up to 24 hours.Sources: 888sport; 888sport

The homepage says withdrawals typically go back to the methods used to fund the account, and that most requests are processed within one business day. It warns that documents may be requested first.Source: 888sport

The UK withdrawal policy, last updated on 3 September 2021, measures each method's Transaction Balance over the past 4 months and pays that back first. The minimum withdrawal is £5, and the policy says it will not pay out to Mastercard or Eurocard debit cards. Time frames count business days, Monday to Friday, and several requests within 24 hours may be combined.Source: 888sport

In Great Britain, licence condition 6.1.2 bars credit-card payments for online betting, and the Commission fined 888 UK Limited £23,000 in August 2024 for breaching it. Condition 17.1.1 requires a licensee to verify a customer's name, address and date of birth before the customer gambles.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission

Limits and safer-gambling tools

The UK policy says accounts registered in the UK use net deposit limits. A daily limit runs over 24 hours and a weekly limit over 7 days, while a monthly limit looks back to the same date of the previous month. When several limits are set, the most restrictive applies.Source: 888sport

The rules are changing. The Commission's consultation response says it expects new customers from 30 September 2026 to be offered gross deposit limits, and does not expect existing customers to be changed back on that date.Source: Gambling Commission

A Control Centre holds deposit statistics, time-spent reminders and the take-a-break and self-exclusion tools. Take-a-break periods run from one day to six weeks, suspend the account on the requested brand only, and carry no cooling-off period afterwards.Source: 888sport

Self-exclusion starts at six months. To reactivate afterwards, the customer must contact member support, and a one-day cooling-off period follows. From 20 April 2023 a new UK request covers related accounts across the group's brands, including William Hill and Mr Green. It can take up to 48 hours, and marketing details are removed within two days. Licence code 3.5.3 requires the account to be closed and any funds returned.Sources: 888sport; Gambling Commission

Drawbacks

The 2022 fine is the main drawback. The Commission said 888's policies set financial checks after a customer had deposited £40,000, and that it did not interact with a customer who lost £37,000 in six weeks. A customer it knew was an NHS worker earning £1,400 a month was given a monthly deposit cap of £1,300.Source: Gambling Commission

It added that most interactions were an email about tools needing no reply, and that one customer with 11 accounts, one of them restricted, could open three more. On money laundering, it said verbal assurances were accepted on employment income, and one customer spent £65,835 in five months without source-of-funds checks.Source: Gambling Commission

The Commission gave an official warning and ordered extensive independent checks. It called this the second enforcement action against the company and said a repeat would make it consider the operator's suitability to hold a licence.Source: Gambling Commission

In 2017 a technical failure let over 7,000 self-excluded customers reach their bingo accounts for over 13 months, and they deposited £3.5 million. One customer staked over £1.3 million, including £55k stolen from an employer. The Commission ordered repayment, £62k of compensation and £4.25 million to a social cause.Source: Gambling Commission

Since 2024 the register lists three further penalties: £23,000 for credit cards, £33,075 for group-account checks and £86,843 for self-exclusion. For the last, the Commission noted human error and that the company reported the breach itself.Source: Gambling Commission

How it compares

Evoke owns both brands. Each keeps its own British licensee: 888 UK Limited (account 39028) and, for William Hill online, WHG (International) Limited (account 39225). William Hill Organization Limited, account 2752, holds the shop licences, with 1,251 premises on its register summary, while 888 UK Limited lists none.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission

The Commission decided against both online licensees on 7 August 2025. It fined 888 UK Limited £33,075 and WHG (International) £82,687, each for paragraph 3 of social responsibility code provision 3.9.1.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission

The large packages differ in shape. William Hill group businesses agreed to pay £19.2 million in March 2023 across three licensees, which the Commission called the largest enforcement payment in its history.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission

If something goes wrong

We did not read 888sport's UK complaints page. Licence code 6.1.1 requires a licensee to let a customer take an unresolved dispute to a free alternative dispute resolution body after eight weeks. The Malta seal page lists eCOGRA as the approved ADR, but we found no page naming the body for UK disputes.Sources: Gambling Commission; Malta Gaming Authority; 888sport

The Commission does not resolve complaints about gambling transactions, so a British customer starts with the operator. Gibraltar's Gambling Commissioner says it will not ordinarily investigate individual UK customer disputes. In Ontario, iGaming Ontario's standards cover disputes where the operator did not respond within 90 days or its answer did not satisfy the player.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gibraltar Gambling Division; iGaming Ontario

UKGC licence: complaints

Complain to the operator first. If it is not resolved within eight weeks, the operator must let you refer the dispute to an accredited ADR provider, free of charge. The Commission says it does not resolve or decide complaints about gambling transactions.

MGA licence: complaints

Licensees must run a written dispute procedure that offers referral to an ADR entity. Players can also complain to the MGA, which recommends trying the operator first.

Gibraltar licence: complaints

Complaints go to the operator first, which must keep an effective complaints procedure. The Gambling Commissioner can then examine and review the operator's facilities or decisions, on a written complaint by email only. For remote gambling taking place in the UK after 1 November 2014, a complaint can be referred to the Division only with the agreement of the UK and Gibraltar licensed operator.

iGaming Ontario / AGCO licence: complaints

Players complain to the operator first. If the operator does not answer within 90 days or the answer is unsatisfactory, the dispute can go to iGaming Ontario, and then to the Ombudsman of Ontario.

  3. Commission: £86,843

A financial penalty for breaching paragraph 3 of social responsibility code provision 3.5.3 on self-exclusion, attributed to human error and reported by the company.

What we could not check

  • How the four company names above relate to each other. The Commission, Gibraltar, Malta and Ontario pages each name a different company, and none says how they are connected.
  • Whether Virtual Digital Services Limited, named on the Malta seal page, is the company the Malta register lists as Mr Green Limited. Both carry the base number MGA/CRP/121/2006, but no page we read says they are one entity.
  • 888sport's odds, markets, terms and rules for Great Britain. The homepage mixes pounds and euros, and its security-and-privacy page returned an error when we requested it.
  • The UK complaints procedure and the dispute body used for British customers, and the countries 888sport accepts outside Great Britain and Ontario.
