Betway: licences, history and record
Betway is the sports-led brand of Super Group, a Guernsey company listed in New York, and it produced 61.3% of the group's 2025 net gaming revenue. The Gambling Commission lists Betway Limited as a British licensee and recorded an £11.6 million settlement in 2020. Betway's own site would not open from our location, so this review leans on regulators and the group's annual report.
We have no commercial arrangement with any operator on this site at the time of writing. The Visit buttons are marked as sponsored links so that they stay correct if that changes.

Company history
According to Wikipedia, Betway was founded in 2006, runs operations from Malta, and has offices in London, Guernsey and Cape Town. In October 2015 it paid €17,879,645 to a player on Microgaming's Mega Moolah slot, which Guinness World Records verified at the time as the largest online slot payout. Super Group's site says Betway was established in 2006 and sells itself as a global sportsbook under one brand.Sources: Wikipedia; Super Group
Super Group's 2025 annual report says its holding predecessor, SGHC Limited, was incorporated in July 2020, and that Pindus Holdings and its subsidiaries operate Betway while Fengari and SG Media operate the Spin casino brands. The predecessor entities were established beginning in 1997. The Guernsey holding company was incorporated on 29 March 2021, and a business combination with Sports Entertainment Acquisition Corp. closed in January 2022.Source: Super Group (SGHC) Limited
The same report says Betway's flagship sportsbook takes bets on more than 70 sports, while South Africa and Nigeria run on a proprietary platform. Betway used Fusion's sportsbook software, licensed through Apricot, until 28 February 2026, when a group company bought the rights outright. It lists football sponsorships with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, a Williams Formula 1 deal, and more than 60 brand partnerships.Source: Super Group (SGHC) Limited
For 2025 the group reports net gaming revenue of $2.2 billion, wagers of $56.8 billion and over 5.6 million customers a month. It splits revenue 40% Africa and the Middle East, 33% North America, 19% Europe, 7% Asia-Pacific and 1% South America. Those are group figures, covering Betway and the Spin casinos together.Source: Super Group (SGHC) Limited
The filing records a shrinking footprint in two markets. The group left India at the end of the third quarter of 2023 after a goods-and-services tax change it called unsustainable. Its US arm announced in July 2025 that it would exit US online casino, and says it no longer offers betting products in the United States, which contradicts Wikipedia's list of American states.Sources: Super Group (SGHC) Limited; Wikipedia

Where you can and cannot use it
Great Britain and Ontario: yes, under the licences above. Payments and withdrawals
We could not read Betway's payment pages, so we cannot list its methods, limits or withdrawal times. In Great Britain, licence condition 6.1.2 bans credit-card gambling, including through e-wallets that accept credit-card top-ups. The filing adds that the Commission has prohibited customer reverse withdrawals.Sources: Gambling Commission; Super Group (SGHC) Limited
Condition 17.1.1 requires a licensee to verify a customer's name, address and date of birth before the customer gambles. Customer money must be held in separate client accounts, and the licensee must tell the customer in writing whether it is protected if the company fails.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission
The annual report puts Betway's processing and fraud costs at $183.2 million in 2025, up 20.5%, and gaming taxes and licence costs at $170.8 million, up 21.8%. It ties the tax growth to South Africa and the United Kingdom, and adds new tax obligations in Botswana in 2025.Source: Super Group (SGHC) Limited
In Ontario, the standards require player funds to be managed clearly, with notice to players about money left in dormant accounts and a way to complain about funds management.Source: AGCO
Limits and safer-gambling tools
Super Group's SuperPlan page lists tools for all its brands: deposit limits, wager limits, cooling-off of at least 24 hours, daily, weekly or monthly time limits, timeouts and self-exclusion. Betway's brand page names a reality check, deposit limit, take-a-break and self-exclusion. We did not read Betway's own rules for them.Sources: Super Group; Super Group
In Great Britain a licensee must offer a time-out of 24 hours, a week, a month or another period up to six weeks. Self-exclusion must close the account and return funds, and marketing must stop within two days.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission
The Commission's deposit-limit rules are changing. A prompt to review limits at least every six months has applied since 31 October 2025, and from 30 September 2026 new customers must be offered gross deposit limits.Source: Gambling Commission
In Ontario, operators must let players set deposit and loss limits at registration, and a request to relax a limit must wait at least 24 hours. Operators must also join the central self-exclusion program, whose terms run from six months to five years.Source: AGCO
Drawbacks
The 2020 package is the main drawback. The Commission said Betway failed to run source-of-funds checks on a customer who deposited over £8 million and lost over £4 million in four years, and failed to interact effectively with another who deposited and lost £187,000 in two days.Source: Gambling Commission
It also said £5.8 million flowed through the business that was, or could reasonably be suspected to be, proceeds of crime. The Commission found inadequate management oversight, and said investigations into personal management licence holders were continuing.Source: Gambling Commission
In Sweden, the regulator penalised Betway in May 2019 for offering bonuses repeatedly after sign-up, with an original penalty of SEK 5 million. The Supreme Administrative Court upheld a reduced SEK 4.7 million on 7 July 2022, according to a trade report.Source: iGaming Business
The annual report says customers have brought civil claims in Austria and Germany contesting the legal basis of the group's services, and that some judgment debts are unpaid, relying on a Maltese law. A Maltese court refused to enforce an Austrian judgment against Betway Limited on 15 January 2026, and the player is appealing.Source: Super Group (SGHC) Limited
Betway also has a pending claim against the State of Hesse over conditions of its German sports betting licence. Wikipedia adds that in 2024 Betway did not pay a €1.3 million winning bet, citing a site defect. We found no primary source for that claim.Sources: Super Group (SGHC) Limited; Wikipedia
How it compares
Both brands run through British licensees owned by groups that are listed abroad. Betway sits in Super Group on the New York Stock Exchange, and Unibet in FDJ UNITED, which bought Kindred in 2024. Betway Limited's Commission entry lists three other trading names.Sources: Gambling Commission; Super Group (SGHC) Limited; Gambling Commission
The licence maps differ. Betway appears in the Ontario directory through Cadway Limited and in South African lists, while Unibet has no Ontario entry. Unibet's licensee appears on the Gibraltar list, and we found no Betway entry there.Sources: iGaming Ontario; National Gambling Board; Gibraltar Gambling Division
The records differ in shape. Betway carries one £11.6 million Commission package from 2020, tied to high-value customers. Unibet's licensee paid £2.9 million in 2023 and £10 million in 2025. Neither brand's own site opened for us.Sources: Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission; Gambling Commission

If something goes wrong
We did not read Betway's complaint procedure. Its help portal links the Independent Betting Adjudication Service and eCOGRA. Licence code 6.1.1 requires a UK licensee to let a customer take an unresolved dispute to a free alternative dispute resolution body once eight weeks have passed.Sources: Betway; Gambling Commission
Ontario players can use iGaming Ontario's complaints service, and the Malta Gaming Authority has its own complaints route. The register pages below show which regulator covers each licensee.Sources: iGaming Ontario; Malta Gaming Authority
UKGC licence: complaints
Complain to the operator first. If it is not resolved within eight weeks, the operator must let you refer the dispute to an accredited ADR provider, free of charge. The Commission says it does not resolve or decide complaints about gambling transactions.
MGA licence: complaints
Licensees must run a written dispute procedure that offers referral to an ADR entity. Players can also complain to the MGA, which recommends trying the operator first.
iGaming Ontario / AGCO licence: complaints
Players complain to the operator first. If the operator does not answer within 90 days or the answer is unsatisfactory, the dispute can go to iGaming Ontario, and then to the Ombudsman of Ontario.
Regulatory record
- Sweden: SEK 5 million
Sweden's gambling regulator penalised Betway for breaching bonus rules, with the first decision in May 2019. A trade report says the Supreme Administrative Court upheld SEK 4.7 million on 7 July 2022.
Source: iGaming Business - UK Gambling Commission: £11.6 million
A package of £11.6 million for social responsibility and money-laundering failings linked to seven high-spending customers. The Commission's timeline and Wikipedia give March 2020. The sanction page's 4 March 2023 line is an update stamp, not a publication date.

- The Malta licence entry itself; the number and date come from Betway's help portal.
- Which licensed entity serves each country outside the registers named above, and whether the licences in the group's filing are all current.
- The 2006 founding date, the 2015 jackpot and the 2024 unpaid bet, which are Wikipedia's or Super Group's own account.
- The Commission's register shows no regulatory actions for Betway Limited, even though its timeline records the 2020 package; we report both as read.
